It is just used to verify status of sensors, etc prior to launch.  Various information is displayed and updates every few seconds.  Green button pauses\/resumes on currently displayed info.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/distantpulse.com\/serenity\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/controlpanel.jpg\" target=\"_popup\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/distantpulse.com\/serenity\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/controlpanel.jpg\" width=\"25%\" height=\"25%\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Microcontroller<\/strong><\/p>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkfun.com\/commerce\/product_info.php?products_id=9710\" target=\"_popup\">ArduPilot Mega<\/a> - this one's perfect!  It includes convenient RC override!  It's worth noting that I do not plan to use the navigation software that comes with the ArduPilot microcontroller because it will not work for my needs 'out of the box' and this portion of the challenge is part of why I'm doing this project in the first place!  I was quite surprised at how tiny the board was when it arrived in the mail.  \ud83d\ude42<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/distantpulse.com\/serenity\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ardupilot.jpg\" target=\"_popup\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/distantpulse.com\/serenity\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ardupilot.jpg\" width=\"25%\" height=\"25%\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>\nI've also been messing with a TI Launchpad for some tests.  For example, I used it to test the automation of the camera power on\/off, mode, and shutter. It won't be useful for long trips, but might be worth it for watching live video from laptop on shore when the boat is near shore.<\/li>\n<p><strong>Heading Sensor (Boat)<\/strong><\/p>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkfun.com\/products\/8656\" target=\"_popup\">Compass Module (with tilt compensation)<\/a><\/li>\n<p>I was originally planning to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkfun.com\/products\/7915\" target=\"_popup\">this much cheaper sensor<\/a>, but have since realized that it requires a perfectly level orientation to produce accurate\/usable results.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/distantpulse.com\/serenity\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/100bucksdiff.jpg\" target=\"_popup\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/distantpulse.com\/serenity\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/100bucksdiff.jpg\" width=\"25%\" height=\"25%\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Heading Sensor (Wind)<\/strong><\/p>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usdigital.com\/products\/ma3\/\" target=\"_popup\">Magnetic Shaft Encoder<\/a> - I will have to make the actual wind vane that is attached to this.\u00a0 This part is a bit pricey, but it comes in a ball-bearing variety that supposedly is extremely low friction... something standard potentiometers really don't offer.<\/li>\n<p><strong>Rudder Servo<\/strong><\/p>\n<li>I'm using a hugenormous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.servodatabase.com\/servo\/futaba\/s5302\" target=\"_popup\">Futaba S5302<\/a> servo for the rudder.<\/li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Byu9cLte0zA\" target=\"_popup\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/distantpulse.com\/serenity\/wp-includes\/images\/crystal\/video.png\" \/>Click here to see the rudder servo in action<\/a>  (ignore the 2nd half of the video - it just shows the boat some more, but it's too dark to see much anyways!)<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sail Position Sensors<\/strong> Underneath the white silicon (Sugru) are 3 reed sensors wired up in parallel.
